Portraits of Language Project
Call for nominations.
Orana Arts in partnership with Dubbo Language & Culture Nest is calling for nominations of Aboriginal Elders living in the Dubbo area to take part in our project ‘Portraits of Language’, a photographic exhibition that will be focused on the Elders and tells their stories connected to language.
Acclaimed photographer Mervyn Bishop has been commissioned to take photographic portraits of Elders, the State Library will then record interviews with the Elders about their experiences with language, the importance of language, and its future. Students and teachers from the Language NEST and Yarradmurra Centre will translate quotes from the interviews into language, which will then accompany the portraits.
An exhibition of the portraits will take place at Artlands in October 2016, with the collection to be held in trust by the Western Plains Cultural Centre. The exhibition hopes to celebrate the significant commitment and achievements of Aboriginal Elders living in Dubbo today.
