Orana Artists: Justine Kuhner

Meet Dubbo singer-songwriter Justine Kuhner, who has been featured in a short film by local filmmaker Kellie Jennar as part of Createability 2016.

Tell us about your artistic practice:
I have a passion for singing, writing music and performing in musical theatre productions. My solo singing experiences consist of classical-style singing, performing a range of genres at the Dubbo Eisteddfod and vocal recitals at Macquarie Conservatorium to acoustic performances at Muso’s Nights and busking.

Proudest professional/creative moment?
Winning the overall Vocal Scholarship at the Dubbo Eisteddfod in 2013.

What are you working on at present?
I am currently working on a profile film as part of the Createability Project with Screenworks. It is a short film that showcases my present journey as a singer and songwriter who has Asperger’s Syndrome and it will feature some live footage of my singing.

What inspires your work?
I like a variety of bands and musical artists. I mainly enjoy listening to songs that I can relate to which inspires me to write my own songs, whether it be writing about my own experiences in a similar subject or something else in my life.

What’s one thing that you wish you knew starting out?
I could say that I wished I started learning the techniques from my classical vocal training at an earlier age than when I started. I was singing for about 7 or 8 years before I started learning more technically at the age of 19.
