The Gilgandra Native Flora Society is a volunteer group formed in 1963 especially to protect and enhance the 8.5ha of wildflowers that grow in the Gilgandra Flora Reserve, and to promote the recreational, environmental and educational role that it plays in the community. The group meets monthly from March to September at the Flora Reserve for meetings and working bees and welcomes anyone who would like to join. We hold an annual Picnic in the Bush in Oct. as our main fundraiser, also produced a native flower calendar for two years, and held a very successful exhibition of art and craft in many mediums, from many local people, all based on native flowers. There are many local Australian native flowers in the Gilgandra area. They are part of our cultural heritage, and the best place to find some is in the Gilgandra Flora Reserve. Travel north from Gilgandra on the Newell for 8k, turn at the sign and another 6k brings you to the reserve. It is always open to the public, and has bbqs, shelters, seating and wheel-chair access to toilet facilities. Flowering is from the middle of August to November, with the main flowering in September and October.
